Talent ID on BBC Radio 5
Monday night I was on BBC Radio 5 taking part in a lively debate about how to measure a football player’s character and psychological profile before signing him. You can listen to the discussion HERE
The debate about talent id starts 1:06:18 into the programme.
Basically my main point was that psychological profiles are often useless because:
1. They measure the wrong things
2. Players answer these questionnaires with the answers they assume the coaches/psychologists want to hear
3. Most of the results from psychological testing are common sense.
4. You shouldn’t evaluate people on what they say, but rather on what they do
I think there is a huge potential to be explored if we can find a way to measure psychological characteristics looking at in-game behaviours.
